If you remember Childish Gambino’s last album “Because The Internet” you would know that at the time it was considered his best work to date. Usually when artists such as Childish Gambino releases such a great album it leaves many speculating if they can be able to top it with whatever they release next. Recently, Childish Gambino released his third studio album “Awaken, My Love!” under Glassnote Records which was produced by Ludwig Göransson and himself. After giving it a few listens I can honestly say that he definitely succeeds in making another great album, but in a different approach then you could’ve imagined.
Last month, Childish Gambino released the news that he was gearing up to release his third studio album and with this news came the lead singles “Me and Your Mama” and “Redbone”. These two teasers let us know what to expect from this album and it’s not his usual route of rap and hip hop. With “Awaken, My Love!” Childish Gambino chose to venture into a more soul R&B and psychedelic rock feel for this album.
Whenever artists choose to make music in a genre other than the one they’re known for it leaves some more skeptical than curious. Childish Gambino’s “Awaken, My Love!” definitely trumps any skepticism that says he wouldn’t fit in the soul R&B and psychedelic rock scene. This album doesn’t feel out of place what so ever and sounds just as natural as any other artists in this genre. With the release of this type of album from Childish Gambino, it shows that he’s more than capable of breaking down any barriers that he may have as an artist and you can expect more than one type of sound from him.
With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this album and I’m personally interested in hearing more of this type of work from Childish Gambino. If you haven’t given this album a listen yet I would highly recommend that you do as soon as possible. Feel free to listen to the Spotify player below of this album. If you like what you hear, it is available for purchase on iTunes and Google Play as well as stream on Spotify. Also, check out Childish Gambino’s website for more.
